Believe Local Man Perished
Sch. Pilgrim Puts in at Portland to Report Loss of Alphonse Pitman
Lost Last Friday

Alphonso Pitman, 25, of this port, was lost at sea Friday, according to the report brought to Portland by the fishing schooner Pilgrim of this port, on which he was a member of the crew.

Pitman was hauling trawls on Cashes Banks when last seen, and had been warned twice to abandon his work, and return to the craft, according to the skipper.  The man refused, wishing to save his fish and dusk settled before he could be rescued.  a heavy sea came up, and it is feared that his dory capsized.  Search was useless Friday night, but Saturday morning the schooner sailed over the banks in vain.  Pitman was a native of this city, and was single.
