Capt. Ambrose Fleet
Well-Known Skipper Passes On After a Lingering Illness
Another old-time and very well liked fishing
skipper, Capt. Ambrose Fleet of 44 Warner street, passed away about 6
o'clock this morning at the Brighton Marine hospital, at the age of 65 years, following a
lingering illness.
The late Capt. Fleet was one
of the leading skippers out of this port for years, having first sailed on a fishing craft
at the age of 16 years. His commands numbered such leading local vessels as the Mary
DeCoste, Alden, Constellation and Alice and Mildred,
his latest command. He had several other vessels during his 50 years at sea,
engaging mostly in mackerel seining and dragging. He also sailed on Newfoundland
herring trips during the Fall. He was believed by his men and highly respected by
them for his ability to get onto the fish and for his fair dealing with them all.
Capt. Fleet was born in
Branford, N. S., the son of the late William and Christina
(Publicover) Fleet, coming to this city at an early age. He married
Isabel (McEachern) who survives him along with a daughter, Miss Mary
Fleet, three sons, Donald A., William A., both of this city and
Ensign John P. Fleet, meteorologist with the U. S. Naval Air Corps at
Miami, Fla.; a brother, Harris Fleet of this city; and a sister in San
Diego, Cal.
The funeral will be held Saturday morning at
8.15 o'clock from his late home, with solemn requiem high mass at St. Ann's church at 9
o'clock. |
