The Joseph F. Allen

 

January 12, 1877

Sch. Joseph F. Allen sailed for Western Banks October 2nd, since which time nothing has been heard of her. It is supposed that she either foundered in the gale of Oct. 16th, or was run down and sunk while at anchor on the Banks.
She a crew list of ten men as follows:

John Campbell, master
William McNare
Joseph Brown
James Brown
Alpheus Campbell
Woodbury Lewis
Smith McDonald
Angus McDonald
William Rogers
Thomas Russell

So far as can be learned, they were all single men, natives of Nova Scotia; but had followed fishing from this port for several years. She was owned by B. Maddocks & Co., built at Essex in 1867, was 62.03 tons burthen. Valued at $4625 and insured in the Gloucester Mutual Fishing Insurance Company for $4025 and $1000 on her outfits.
